Following FEMA’s “National Preparedness Month” in September, Johnson Middle School is joining millions of people worldwide in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill today, Thursday, October 16, 2025, in recognition of International ShakeOut Day.
During the drill, the Johnson community will practice the recommended earthquake safety steps: “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” This important exercise is part of the school’s commitment to emergency preparedness and follows safety guidance endorsed by emergency officials and first responders.
What to Do During an Earthquake:
If Possible:
-
DROP to your hands and knees to prevent being knocked over.
-
COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand.
-
If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath.
-
If no shelter is available, crawl next to an interior wall away from windows.
-
-
HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
-
If under shelter: hold on to it with one hand and be ready to move with it.
-
If no shelter: continue covering your head and neck with both arms and hands.
-
Adaptations for Individuals with Mobility Challenges:
-
In a bed or recliner: Cover your head and neck with a pillow or your arms.
-
Using a cane: Sit on a chair or bed, cover your head and neck, and keep your cane nearby.
-
Using a walker or wheelchair: Lock the wheels if possible. Bend over and cover your head and neck with your arms, a book, or a pillow. Hold on until the shaking stops.
Johnson Middle School is proud to take part in this global effort to improve earthquake preparedness. Knowing how to respond quickly and safely during an emergency can save lives, and today’s drill helps ensure our school community is ready.
